Gallery of Black and White Photographs

I have brought together in these pages a collection of my own photographs and some useful information relating to the use of traditional cameras and film. There is useful information on film cameras, in particular a review of folding cameras here, there is information on Exposure, Film Speed, Depth of Field, Shutter and Aperture, Sunny 16 here.

Most people know how to use digital cameras, most people do not know how to use film cameras and will not understand that, for example, a folding camera is easier to use and will invariably give much higher image quality in black and white, compared to what is possible with digital and the dynamic range is much greater (ratio of black to white). You just have to get used to not seeing the image until the film is developed and this can be a magical experience.

Scanning the negatives into your computer is to use the best of the old and the new, an inkjet printer, especially one that uses pigment ink can give superb results. All of the prints that you see for sale on this site are printed from an Epson R1800 printer using pigment ink, the resulting image should last for more than 50 years dependent on storage conditions (50% humidity and 18°C would be about right).

I have two prints lying in front of a window, they have been in full daylight with sun when it shines and in over a year have not shown the slightest degree of fading.
